As conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion remain top of mind in America, addressing these issues has become increasingly important for school advancement programs. Organizational leaders need to prepare their staff and volunteers to work effectively, while remaining sensitive to the realities faced by underrepresented alumni and donors. To explore this issue, Dan Allenby led a discussion with Peter Hayashida (UC Riverside), Brooke Hendrickson (UC Berkeley), and Brian Thomas (Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School - MICDS).

Peter Hayashida oversees the comprehensive advancement program at UC Riverside, which includes the alumni relations, communications and marketing, and fundraising teams. As President of The UCR Foundation, he also leads staff and volunteers in the management of the University’s 501(c)(3) charitable corporation with a $250 million endowment. Before joining UCR, Peter worked in student affairs, finance, and advancement at UCLA. Peter holds a BA in Communication Studies from UCLA and an MBA from California State University, Northridge.
Senior Director of Development, Student Experience and Diversity, UC Berkeley
Brooke Hendrickson serves as the Chief Development Officer for UC Berkeley's divisions of Equity & Inclusion, Student Affairs, and Undergraduate Education. The Student Experience & Diversity program and team was created to galvanize impactful engagement and philanthropic support towards the overall success of students and for the advancement of educational equity at UC Berkeley. Prior to her current role, Brooke led annual giving and alumni engagement programs at the California College of the Arts and worked in alumni and parent relations at Pitzer College. She received a BA in English from UC Davis.
Assistant Head of School, Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School
Brian Thomas is Assistant Head of School at Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School (MICDS), where he focuses on constituency engagement and 21st-century learning and habits of mind, while practicing student-centered management. After close to ten years teaching, he has held administrative leadership positions at independent schools for 20 years. In addition to his career in education, Brian has worked as a TV actor, including a recurring role on A Different World. Brian holds a BA in History from Yale University, and an MS in Curriculum & Instruction, with a concentration in Progressive Education, from Portland State University.
