OVERVIEW

As many advancement programs prepare for a new fiscal year, some are facing hiring freezes and budget cuts amid fears of an economic recession and continued uncertainty about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, many are under increasing pressure to generate more philanthropic support with predicted declines in operating revenue from other sources, including tuition, athletics, auxiliary enterprises, and state funding.

Exploring this topic, Dan Allenby (AGN) led an online discussion with industry leaders John Feudo (UMass Lowell), Jocelyn Kane (Yale University), and Heidi Hansen McCrory (Furman University) as they offered perspectives, shared experiences, and tackled important questions.

John Feudo

Vice Chancellor for Advancement, UMass Lowell

John Feudo serves as the Chief Advancement Officer at UMass Lowell and is responsible for leading the university’s first-ever fundraising and engagement campaign. He was formerly the Senior Vice President of Development and Chief Development Officer for United Way of Massachusetts Bay, one of the top organizations within the global network of United Way affiliates. Prior to arriving at United Way, he spent eight years at his undergraduate alma mater, Boston College, as both Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations, and later as Senior Development Officer. Feudo holds graduate degrees from Boston College and Lesley University, and is an award-winning speaker and author, having published six books in the field of advancement.

Jocelyn Kane

Managing Director of the Yale Alumni Fund, Yale University

Jocelyn Kane has been at Yale University for more than nine years, and before taking on the role of Managing Director, led the Yale College Alumni Fund. Previously she served as the Director of Annual Giving at Trinity College and as the Manager of Individual Giving at AFS Intercultural Programs. She's an active member of the Annual Giving Directors Consortium (AGDC) and holds a Master's in Direct Marketing Communications from New York University as well as a Bachelor's in English and History from Colby College.

Heidi Hansen McCrory

Vice President for Development, Furman University

Heidi Hansen McCrory joined Furman in 2018 as its Chief Advancement Officer after serving as Vice President for College Relations at Kenyon College. McCrory also spent 14 years at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, serving as Associate Vice President for Development (2000-06), Vice President for Development (2006-09), and Vice President for Alumnae and Development (2009-14). McCrory is a graduate of Southern Methodist University, and earned a Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is an active member of CASE, where she teaches new fundraisers and sits on the Liberal Arts Advisory Council.
